PNCI Update

May 21, 2010

European ParlimentThe Parliamentary Network for Critical Issues (PNCI), an outreach of the Gospel of Life Ministries, took its work to advance respect and dignity for life through law and policy to Europe. First stop was the monthly plenary meeting of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg, France.

The 736 Members of the European Parliament pass laws for the 27 member nations of the European Union (EU), oversee the numerous institutions of the EU, and approve the EU budget. The EU funds development programs around the world and has been criticized by pro-life advocates for its promotion of abortion despite the official neutral position of the European Parliament. Policies on abortion differ greatly among the member nations with Malta, Ireland and Poland offering the unborn the greatest protection in law.

PNCI networks with Members and staff of the European Parliament on critical issues related to the culture of life including working with the Institute for Human Dignity. Institute Chairman Ben Harnwell met with PNCI to discuss the progress of the work to uphold the dignity of every life in legislatures around the world. The International Committee on Human Dignity is chaired by Gay Mitchell, MEP (Ireland); members include Luca Volontè Member, Council of Europe (Italy), Professor Lord David Alton, MP (UK) and Congressman Chris Smith (US). http://www.dignitatishumanae.com/#/institute-homepage/4535551296

While in Strasbourg, PNCI also took part in discussions related to the pro-abortion actions of the Council of Europe which oversees human rights and the rule of law in its 47 member states.  The Council of Europe is known to promote a radical pro-abortion agenda but does not have legal authority to ensure compliance with its anti-life resolutions.

WHO DisplayGeneva was the final stop as the World Health Organization (WHO) was holding the Sixty-third World Health Assembly that included discussion of the achievement of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MDG 5—Improve maternal health—has been hijacked by pro-abortion activists who claim incorrectly that legalized abortion is needed to reduce maternal deaths. PNCI met with faithful pro-life advocates monitoring the WHO meeting and voicing the pro-life message including Jeanne Head, Vice President for International Affairs-National Right to Life Committee, Patrick Buckley, Society for Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), and Scott Fischbach, Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life Global Outreach. http://lifenews.com/int1547.html

Bob Lalonde, Special Advisor to PNCI, also met with Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, President of the Pontifical Council for Health Care WorkersBob Lalonde, Special Advisor to PNCI, also met with Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, President of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers who is participating in the WHO assembly.

The global struggle to save both mothers and their babies, born and unborn, from the violence of abortion is at a tipping point in numerous continues around the world under pressure from the European Union, WHO, United Nations and US non-governmental organizations operating with US financial support. PNCI helps lawmakers defend the culture of life in key battles around the world and uphold the dignity of life in law and policy.
